Jesus sent into the Roman world a few people who, humanly speaking, had little chance of accomplishing what he challenged them to do. Make disciples of all nations, baptizing those same disciples and teaching them to obey the words of Christ. And then later he appeared to them in the upper room and challenged them to be witnesses. I am sure that those few people had little idea of how to strategically accomplish the mission. What did they do? They walked out the door and into the street. They preached the word to those around them and followed the leading of the Spirit.
We still have a huge task in front of us. We are called to the same mission. And just as with the early believers we must never forget that God has the strategy. We simply need to respond to the opportunities around us and follow the leading of the Spirit. Because as God has promised in our Mission theme verse, there will come a time when, “every tongue acknowledges that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”. There is room at the table of God for all nations.
At OCM we are surrounded by God given opportunities that are our part to reach all nations. The question is, will we follow through on His plan? Will we become better partners for our missionaries making sure that they have the resources that they need? Are we opening our eyes to those people right in front of us just as the early apostles did? Are we ready to go ourselves as some of the apostles did to share the Gospel in a different land?
Missions month is a time for us to look deeply within ourselves as individuals and as a church. Can we do better? Can we do more? What is God’s spirit telling us? Let’s spend this month attending each service. Let’s listen and learn from each missionary. Let’s understand together how God can use the incredible resources that God has given to OCM. Together, let’s walk out the door and into the street.
