God's Word

After dating for a little over a year, I headed to seminary in MA while my then girlfriend attended graduate school at NYU. A year later, I proposed to her. During these three years, we saw each other for a total of about 3 months. In those days, there were no cell phones. Long distance between NYC and MA was expensive, $.25 per minute. We called each other once a month and the alternative was writing letters, a lost art today. Receiving her letters was the highlight of my days. The moment a love letter arrived, I would tear it open and read it. Then I would reread it and try to read between the lines. I was trying to gather every drop of love she had for me. I wrote her many love poems which she kept, some I’m embarrassed of.

Have you ever read the Bible, God’s love letter to you, the same way? If you’re not pouring over the Bible, trying to glean every bit of wisdom from it, then you are not fully tasting the banquet God has prepared for you. Psalm 119:103, “How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey.”

The Bible is full of nourishment; it has spiritual food that will keep you healthy. Are you fasting or feasting on the Word of God? Going to church once a week and hearing a sermon is not a feast. If you only ate one meal a week, you wouldn’t grow or be healthy. The same is true for your spiritual nourishment. Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4

You’ll truly taste the sweetness of God’s Word when you feed on it daily, read it, study it, meditate on it, and let it saturate your heart, soul and mind.
