Rev. John L. Ng is currently an Associate Professor of Pastoral Studies at Alliance Theological Seminary and the Advisory Pastor with New York Chinese Baptist Church. He also serves as an Associate Director of PaLM (a parachurch organization serving the Asian churches and pastors in the greater New York area) and a church planting coach for the Metro District of the Christian Missionary Alliance. He and his wife, Laura Yan, have four adult children and a grandson. |
MEGILLOTH - Esther, Song of Songs, Ruth, Ecclesiastes,
Lamentations. These shorter and least pretentious scrolls of the
Bible are assigned public readings at five Jewish annual holidays
holy days - when God’s people gather for worship: Purim,
Passover, Pentecost, Tabernacles, Ninth of Ab. Each reading
beckons our attention to their life together in God, with God and of God.
THE MYTH OF ANTAEUS - The giant Antaeus always slept on
the ground to conserve and increase his colossal strength. When
ever he touched the earth his strength revived. In a wrestling
match, Hercules noticed that every time he threw Antaeus to the ground,
the giant’s muscles would swell and energy would suffuse. So Hercules
threw Him down no more but held him high above in the sky. Separated
from the earth, the giant grew weak. In his anemic state, Hercules crushed
his ribs one by one until the giant died.
EARTHY SPIRITUALITY - If our spirituality is lived apart from the ground
of reality, faith is weak and innocuous. Our theology - knowing God - has
two layers: cognitive and intuitive. The God we cognitively know may not
be the God we intuitively feel. Each reading of the five scrolls addresses a
significant aspect of the way we know, think and feel God.

Rev. Freddy Baez is the director of Psychosocial services for a Montefiore Medical Group in the Bronx. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of clinical experience. He also holds a MSW degree from Fordham University and a Masters in Theological Studies from Logos Bible College and Graduate School. Rev. Baez teaches Pastoral Care studies for ATS as well as for the Alliance Graduate School of Counseling.
He serves as an Associate Pastor at Harvest Fields Community Church in the Bronx. He lives with his wife Yvonne Baez Esq. of 28 years and two adult children, Joel and Leah A. Baez. They currently reside in the Bronx.
